Basic insurance is legally required and covers standard medical services. Supplementary insurance is optional and offers extended services like semi-private hospital stays, alternative medicine, dental treatments, or glasses. Services and prices vary greatly depending on the provider.
Supplementary insurance offers valuable benefits beyond basic coverage – and it's worth it if it suits your lifestyle. Here's an overview:
  • Glasses & contact lenses: Depending on the provider, up to CHF 800 per year may be covered. Ideal for regular vision correction needs – often available in combination with other benefits.
  • Non-prescription medications: Covers medicines not included in basic insurance. Recommended for chronic illnesses.
  • Psychotherapy by psychologists: Supplementary insurance reimburses up to 90% of costs if the therapy is not medically prescribed. Important for long-term psychological support.
  • Fitness & prevention: Contributions of up to CHF 900 per year for gyms, yoga, back training, or health courses – attractive for health-conscious individuals.
  • Dental insurance: Covers services like dental hygiene, cavities, and orthodontics – especially important for children (e.g., braces), but also useful for adults.
  • Foreign coverage: For travel to countries with high healthcare costs (e.g., USA, Canada, Australia), a travel supplementary insurance protects against high out-of-pocket costs in medical emergencies.
Pillar 3a is a key part of the Swiss retirement system. It allows you to save additionally for retirement, alongside AHV and your pension fund. By contributing to pillar 3a, you can close pension gaps and benefit from attractive tax advantages.
